Meet Mrs. VanHorn
My name is Mrs. VanHorn and I am so excited to be your child's
teacher this year! Third grade is a wonderful year! It is a year when
children not only gain a ton of knowledge, but also build lifelong friendships,
become more responsible and independent, and have fun.
I look forward to creating a memorable year together!

Background:
My name is Mrs. (Nicole) VanHorn (you may remember me as Miss Yahne). I grew up on Sweetwater Lake in Brown County, Indiana. I went to Brown County Schools growing up. I always knew I wanted to work with children but did not know in what capacity. My senior year I was able to job shadow an elementary teacher. During that time, I discovered that this is what I was meant to do. I went to Franklin College because they have an amazing teaching program that provides tons of real-life teaching experiences, including teaching in Mexico. I received my degree in elementary education from Franklin College in 2007. I began working in the Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation that fall. This is my eleventh year working at Clark Elementary. I began my time here as an instructional assistant for two years. I was then fortunate enough to take over multiple classes in first, second, and third grade throughout the corporation. This will be my eighth year teaching third grade. I got married in 2009 and moved to Greenwood. My husband, Mr. VanHorn, has his Master's degree in Biology and did cancer research at Methodist Hospital for 3 years. He then decided to change career paths and is now a Biology teacher at WCHS and the Boys Soccer Coach. We have two very spoiled poodles named Callie and Luna. In my spare time I enjoy walking my dogs, traveling, reading, movies, music, and I love all animals.
My Philosophy:
I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn. Every child learns differently and it is my job to find a way to reach each one. I will help every student become confident in his/her abilities and reach his/her full potential. I will build a community within my classroom where students support one another. I will provide a safe, positive, and structured learning environment. Students will have various opportunities to showcase their talents and interests. It is important that children have choices and are guided in the choices they make. My classroom will be a combination of hands-on learning, paper/pencil learning, independent work, partner work, group work, sharing, listening, and much more. I believe children should be responsible for their own learning. I believe each day is a new beginning. Not only will students learn academic skills, but they will also gain social skills and life skills that will help them succeed in the world after third grade.
Third grade is a transitional grade. Be ready to watch your children learn, grow, and become more independent and responsible this year. I look forward to a wonderful year with your children!
